about

From Naoko Tsujita, composer:

Indonesian gamelan was introduced to the Western music world in the late 1800s. Ever since, countless composers were influenced by this unique ensemble, and adopted elements of the music in their compositions. I originally composed this piece for James Renwick, who premiered it at the Canadian Music Centre in 2019. I am excited to have this piece featured on Daniel's album.

I was first introduced to the gamelan when I moved to Canada in 2011. Five years after that, I became involved in a Balinese gamelan ensemble and a Sundanese gamelan ensemble in different provinces in Canada. The initial composition began with the second movement, which consists of constant 16th notes with a rock feel. To make this composition accessible to a wider audience, I concluded it with a rock groove. The first movement was inspired by Javanese gamelan music, played in courts in Java. The music has a calmness and stillness, yet maintains a comfortable groove throughout.
